OBJECTIVE: To have Isadora Duncan be properly recognized and acknowledged by a permanent exhibit in the History Department at the Oakland Museum.

REASON: Isadora Duncan, World Renowned Artist, California Native Daughter was raised in Oakland California. Isadora was born in 1877, grew up and lived in Oakland for eighteen years where she gained much of her inspiration. She was known throughout the world as the Mother of Modern Dance. Also known for her revolutionary ideas and commitment to social change. Her philosophy on dance and movement brought a revolutionary inspiration to the Art of the Dance. Included in her new dance were, passion, strength, grief, defiance, and grace.
From the 1910’s on she was world renowned not only as a dancer but as a symbol of revolution and women’s emancipation. Isadora was a writer and choreographer, not merely a dancer. She danced her own compositions. Her many contributions included returning dance to a high art form. She opened a school for children in Russia at the beginning of the Russian revolution. She had very progressive concepts of education with emphasis on art and music. Isadora had a great influence on the Russian Ballet and also helped influence contemporary women’s fashion. She was a supporter of the New Left Movement in the United States. She raised funds for Sacco and Vanzetti’s defense.
She has been acknowledged by two major newspapers, the Oakland Tribune and the Washington Post, as one of the most influential people of the Twentieth Century.
World famous sculptor, Auguste Rodin, said Isadora was one of his greatest inspirations and that she was “Perhaps the greatest woman the world has ever known”.

Performance at the Pardee House Museum,
Oakland California on April 19, 2015

Yesterday Lois had the wonderful opportunity to perform at the Pardee House for a group of supporters and officers of the museum, the entertainment program of an event created to thank these people. There were perhaps sixty people packed into the living room and hallway of what was the home of George Pardee as a youngster and on to be the home of his family and his wife, Helen. Pardee was a medical doctor and politician who became mayor of Oakland and later Governor of California, 1903 to 1907.
So this is why it was so wonderful. The house is actually in the nearby neighborhood to where Isadora grew up in Oakland. It is one block from the still existing Oakland Unitarian Church where Isadora first performed. Lois was introduced as Isadora by Dennis, dressed in evening attire of the period, playing Governor Pardee.  Full story
